After Nick's departure, the substitution of a second guitar and synthesiser for a bass led to a replacement of droney structure with more heavily layered guitars over pop structures. Containing almost as many tracks as its predecessor, "Shake Hands, Hi" is a much briefer offering, delving, lyrically, into more obscure and personal topics than "Even When I'm Sick".

This album was originally intended to be released exactly one year before its current release date.
